(prHWY.com) August 13, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- Johnson & Sholtz Pharmaceuticals has announced a revolutionary new treatment for toenail fungus that is not only effective but stylish! In partnership with Hapi Toze, the manufacturer of the popular "barefoot shoes" style of athletic footwear, Johnson & Sholtz will roll out its Helthi Toze brand later this year.

"Helthi Toze combines the stylishness of toe shoes, the sports footwear that came into fashion in a big way over the past three to five years, with a proven toenail fungus treatment," says Phil Torgeson, chairman of Johnson & Sholtz.

The new product, which looks like the popular barefoot shoes (or what designers sometimes call "minimalist footwear"), actually contains a gentle abrasive on the inner side to buff infected nails, and releases small but highly targeted packets of antifungal cream over time while the wearer goes about his business.

Toenail infections have historically been highly resistant to treatment. Some people carry them for years on end without being able to find a successful cure, because the infection can be tough to get at.

On the one hand, an antifungal cream needs to be applied regularly; but on the other, it has to be able to get into or through the tough, dry nail to kill the fungus. Sufferers of onchomycosis, the medical term for a fungus infection of the nails, often had to alternate between steady trimming and filing of nails and applying new coatings of a salve that was hard to keep in place.

"It's been a terrible hassle because treating toenail fungus is so labor-intensive," explains Hal Johnson, who says he has had toenail infections off and on for much of his life. "You're constantly filing, and buffing, and washing, and applying creams - not to mention changing socks and shoes several times a day and spraying them with Lysol or bleach."

Helthi Toze shoes will perform the complex tasks of fighting toenail infections all together, and automatically, without any further attention from the patient, Torgeson asserts: "Just put them on and go."

"Not only do sufferers of onchomycosis endure a disfiguring fungus that can be persistent and uncomfortable, but they often suffer socially, especially during the summer months," says Dr. Jennifer Sampson, a psychologist. "When the people around them are out and about in bare feet, sandals, and flip-flops, people with a toenail fungus are afraid to be seen at all."

Johnson & Sholtz believes its new shoes will make wearers more socially mobile throughout most of the year. Torgeson says the company's next innovation in toenail fungus treatment will be a line of nail polishes containing antifungal ingredients that will penetrate the nails while making them pretty on the surface.
