(prHWY.com) August 25, 2012 - Oklahoma City, OK -- There are many ways to make or copy a key. The two most common machines used are the punch down machine and the duplicating machine. These machines are easy to use and all locksmith companies have access to at least one of them. If you are not interested in hiring a professional locksmith to make or copy your key, you can find these machines at most large hardware stores. Let us now explain to you the differences of these machines and how they work. (

The punch down machine is very easy to use as long as you know the correct code of the key you are copying. You may never have thought about it, but every lock needs a different key. The way you are able to read this is by a numbered code. Each number stands for a different type of notch on the end of the key. On a punch down machine you must enter each number individually.
You will first insert your new key that has not been cut yet into the slot. You will then enter the first number code. After that number has been cut, you can then enter the next number and so on. Most keys include multiple numbers in the code. If not, then you will only have to enter one number and cut the entire key at once. As you can tell from the name, the punch down machine literally punches a certain form down on the key until it is cut rather than etching into the key.
A duplicating key is the most common type of key cutting machine. The automatic version can be found at most large hardware stores and in most locksmith offices. If using the automatic version, this machine is very easy to use. You simply insert the original key into a slot. You then insert a new, uncut key, into the second slot. Once you press the start button the machine simply reads the original key and then etches the exact same form onto the new key. The manual version is a little more difficult to use and are not commonly seen. With this machine, you will actually help move the machine along the uncut key in order to cut it. Once the key is done being cut, you will then buff it quickly and you are done.
Now when you go get a key copied at your nearby hardware store, you will be able to tell what type of machine they are using and how it actually works. If you are in need of a duplicated key, you can search the internet for which
