(prHWY.com) August 27, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- In a move to break from typical procedure, an Ann Arbor area English tutor decided that the best way that she could teach people English is to have them teach her.
"I figured the only way to know that they had an absolute mastery of the English language was to have them develop their
own methods for teaching me," said Emily Katherine, who developed this curious method in order to attract a different type of clientele.
The trouble was that Ms. Katherine lives in an area where there are hundreds of English tutors available, so she had to figure out some way to compete with them. What could she do in order to distinguish herself from people who maybe had more experience or a better reputation than her?
"I realized a long time ago that you can test yourself to see how well you understand a topic if you can teach someone else about that subject matter at not stumble. So I decided that I was going to tutor people in the English language by having my client tutor me. That way, they would find out for themselves what they had the most difficulty with, because that would be the topic that they would have the hardest time teaching."
This method, though unusual, seems to have worked well for Katherine, as her entire schedule is now booked with people teaching her English.
"I actually had to raise my price a little bit because the demand for my services was exceeding the amount of time that I had in the day. I actually got to quit my other job waitressing and commit solely to being tutored in English."
As far as the success rate is going, Katherine says that 100% of the students who have taught her English have gone on to speak, read, and write absolutely fluently. Some have actually continued on and written books, or continued teaching other people as well.
"Some of my students are now teachers," explains Katherine, "but none of them are competing with me because they still only know how to tutor, whereas I have become an expert in being tutored."
She said that other people are trying to follow her lead, but have found that it is almost impossible to maintain the kind of patience required for that difficult of a job, and most quit early in the process.
