Employing the Cutter Stratton, the Coast Guard is demonstrating the utility of Hood Tech's systems associated with small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, aka UAVs) for the National Security Cutter fleet. The imaging systems used in the "proof of concept"... "can provide persistent and efficient surveillance in support of all 11 Coast Guard Missions".
Aboard the Stratton, a Hood Tech Superwedge Launcher flings a UAV into the air as part of a demonstration leading to future deployments of small UAVs (

It also demonstrates one of the safety features of the launcher: activation by a long release line, which provides the crew a large margin of security.
When in 1990 Hood Tech began producing UAV launchers and innovative retrieval systems for small UAVs, those innovations enabled the elimination of runways for launch and retrieval. This freed aircraft for shipboard use, in rugged landscapes, and for other difficult locations. Showing their ruggedness and reliability, Hood Tech launchers have been used to initiate tens of thousands of flights under the extreme environments of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and aboard ships in the oceans across the globe.
Dr. Andy von Flotow founded Hood Technology in Hood River, Oregon in 1993. Along with the design and manufacture of launch systems, Hood Technology:
Develops, tests, and manufactures stabilized imaging systems for a variety of UAVs and
Monitors blade vibrations in industrial turbines and jet engines, a diagnostic method for predicting possible future failures.
