Physician Advice Could Help Prevent Osteoporosis
Design Benefit Plans was founded on the premise that not only are health insurance needs different for different people, but also that these needs are driven by other factors.
(prHWY.com) September 26, 2012 - Irving, TX -- Irving, Texas - Osteoporosis is five times more prevalent in women, according to new guidelines issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. However, osteoporosis can be staved off with guidance administered by health care providers during adolescence. Avoiding and/or correcting certain lifestyle factors during their peak bone-building stage will help teenagers prevent bone loss.

The guidelines recommended that health care providers should issue medical advice to teenage girls in regard to bone health and lifestyle factors that could increase their risk for osteoporosis. Risky behaviors pinpointed by the guidelines include smoking, poor eating habits and excessive weight loss. These behaviors can also drive up rates for high risk insurance.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also recommends that women aged 65 and older receive bone-mineral-density screenings every two years. Women should be screened more frequently if new risk factors emerge. Women should seek screenings to estimate their fracture risk on a yearly basis. In these tests, a screening tool reviews risk factors like age, body-mass index, history of fractures, alcohol consumption and whether or not the patient is a smoker.

Many preventive services are now free of charge for patients under health care reform. The team at Design Benefit Plans is happy to answer any questions you may have about the effect of health care reform on high risk insurance.
