3-Cylinder Engines to Appear in U.S. Markets Like Casey BMW

(prHWY.com) October 4, 2012 - Newport News, VA -- As consumers demand higher performance numbers and fuel consumption indicators, automakers like BMW must strive to deliver the best performance and fuel economy possible. One major way BMW plans to do this is by introducing the 3-cylinder engine to U.S. markets.

The new 3-cylinder engine is highly efficient and will be exactly what the customers are looking for. BMW plans to offer this fuel-saving, power-delivering engine in the next generation MINI, which will be arriving on the scene some time in 2014. In addition, BMW plans to bring the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine over to America in the 2014 BMW i8.

Concerning the new engine availability, Ian Robertson, a BMW AG board member for sales and marketing, said at the Paris auto show, "Hybrids with a three-cylinder engine are coming rapidly." This is because drivers are becoming less concerned with what he called "the ins and outs" of the engine. Instead, drivers, he said, "want performance," as indicated by customer reliance on performance statistics and EPA gas mileage estimates.

Named the "Baby Six," the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine is closely related to the award winning 3-liter 6-cylinder, but it has its own feisty personality that really makes it seem much larger than a 3-cylinder. The 3-cylinder engine should not fool anyone, as it still manages to produce between 120 and 220 hp, which is a great deal of power for such a small, fuel-saving engine.
BMW estimates that the engine will be a candidate for any vehicle up to 1,300 kilograms (or around 2,866 pounds).
