(prHWY.com) November 8, 2012 - Downey, CA -- A new laser treatment for gum disease promises to cure patients and restore their teeth and gums to healthy tissue. The procedure is called LANAP which stands for 'laser-assisted new attachment procedure' and it's a gum surgery designed to treat periodontitis. Studies show more than eighty percent of Americans suffer from gum disease so it's a much needed new form of therapy with the potential to help millions of people.

The United States Food and Drug Administration cleared the laser periodontal disease treatment in 2004. The LANAP form of therapy is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more consumers are requesting the procedure to cure their bleeding gums. The biggest benefit of LANAP is it reverses gum disease completely so patients are restored back to health.

Dr. McAllister, a family and cosmetic dentist in Los Angeles is a LANAP specialist who teaches other dentists how to perform the procedure. Dr. McAllister said, "If you have gum disease, and would like to reverse it, LANAP may be the right procedure for you." With LANAP, no surgical glue, bone graft material, stitches, collagen plugs or sutures are needed which is good news for patients who are afraid of pain.

Laser periodontal therapy begins with local anesthesia then a short-duration laser pulse is used on the pockets around the patient's afflicted teeth, which are probed down about a quarter of an inch. The laser effectively kills bacteria and pathologic proteins near the root of the teeth while the healthy connective tissue is preserved. Dr. McAllister said, "Typically, two or three passes with the laser will be enough to clear the infected pocket."

Because the LANAP procedure spares healthy tissue more than scaling and root planning most patients experience minimal post-operative pain. Bleeding is reduced as well as swelling and gum recession. Any discomfort may be controlled with an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen.
