(prHWY.com) November 9, 2012 - San Francisco, CA -- San Francisco, CA- Two public pools in Ottawa were closed in October for maintenance and renovation, and swim programs were suspended.
The work at the pools is being done "proactively to ensure these facilities are safe and fit-for-purpose to support the delivery of services," a city news release stated, according to the Ottawa Citizen.
The Pinecrest Recreation Center's pool was to reopen Nov. 1. The center is at 2250 Torquay Ave. Its website said the closure was for "mechanical issues." The pool at the Brewer Complex was undergoing "major renovations" and faced "construction delays," according to its website. The complex is at 100 Brewer Way.
Ottawa's 17 recreation facilities and 29 pools are in "fair" condition, according to a city report. The municipality's limited funding has "increased pressure on maintaining the condition of existing facilities and some unscheduled service interruptions can be expected," according to the report.
Members of the community have expressed concern about the condition of the Pinecrest Center.
"We are writing to ask that the City of Ottawa take appropriate steps to ensure our residents continue to have access to high quality recreation areas," the Leslie Park Community Association said. The group's open letter was addressed to Mayor Jim Watson.
The association noted that the area is expected to have "explosive population growth" because of large housing developments planned nearby.
The programs at the pools were suspended, and those who paid for swimming lessons would have their accounts credited. People who want refunds were asked to contact the pools. Users who have Aquafitness passes would be allowed to use them at other facilities, suspend membership, or receive credit or a refund.
The city also closed a library in October. The Osgoode branch of the public library system was to be shut Oct. 13-20 for improvements. Library users were referred to the nearby branches of Manotick, at 5499 S. River Drive; Metcalfe, at 2782 Eighth Line Road, and North Gower, at 6579 Fourth Line Road.
