(prHWY.com) November 20, 2012 - Dehradun, India -- It gives us all great pleasure & pride to announce that the UPES Team participating in 'OCEAN-III' PlugIn Competition of Schlumberger, won the First Prize in the finals held on 02nd November, 2012 - all of value Rs. 200,000/-!
The UPES team, who developed the plug-in- 'DrillSense' , comprised of two bright students from B. Tech Applied Petroleum Engineering & they are:

* Pramit Chakraborty
* Chiradeep Gupta
The enormity of the challenge of winning the first prize in this competition can be gauged from the fact that there were 90 teams participating in this competition, representing colleges across India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. Over three rounds of elimination, only 7 teams were left in the fray for the final round. The final presentations were judged by top E&P specialists from not only SLB, but Cairn, DGH, ONGC, Reliance Industries Ltd., OIL and ISV's such as Wipro, L&T Infotech & EMC2.
The DrillSense plug-in is a drill string design and testing utility whose main objective is to design an
economical drillstring and test a drillstring against any mechanical failures. It also optimizes the potential
of the well path module in Petrel*. It uses American Petroleum Institute (API) standards for the
designing and testing of the drillstring. It also contained context help in which user can view the
definition of the term(s), API data charts for reference. It has color coded failure detection for tests
selected by the user. The user can export the results generated in both sections in Petrel* and also save
in pdf format. Plug-in also contains a unit converter to convert various quantities to required units for
calculation.
This plug-in in Petrel* would augment the capabilities of 'Well Path' module in Petrel*. It will help in generating the most cost effective drillstring design for a well path. DrillSense would aid software capabilities of Schlumberger in accordance with the latest technologies currently available.
For those who may not be aware of what 'OCEAN' entails, the competition is annually conducted for
students, in different quarters of the world, by SLB. The Ocean software development framework,
based on Microsoft state-of-the-art technology, is the most productive software development
environment available in the oil and gas industry. The Ocean framework accelerates the development
and deployment of innovative software solutions to solve particular industry challenges. It also enables
seamless integration of a company's specialized applications or intellectual property inside the Petrel
application.
Needless to say, there were many glowing compliments about the students & UPES at the award function. We are indeed very proud of our boys.
