(prHWY.com) November 21, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- The famed pirate Blackbeard was notorious for traveling the world, stealing goods from numerous ships all up and down the ocean. Many of the treasures Blackbeard stole have since been recovered and returned to the rightful owners, but some have been lost forever.

That was until now. A small tour group that took one of the many Galapagos tours offered by Traveling Abroad, Inc. may have discovered one of Blackbeard's long lost treasures.

"We were walking along one of the amazingly pretty beaches on the Galapagos Islands, when I discovered what appeared to be a wooden chest buried in the sand", said Ruth Kennedy. "We ran over the area and immediately started digging. That was when we discovered the treasure chest."

It took approximately two hours to dig the chest out from the sand. When the small tour group finished removing the chest from the sand they discovered that it contained numerous items inside.

"We were expecting the chest to contain some note or something as we thought it was a prank", said Kennedy. "When we opened it up it looked like it contained numerous jewels, gems and gold. I was speechless at first. I couldn't believe it."

The tour group took the treasures to the local pawn shop where an expert was called in to appraise the items. The appraiser was able to without a doubt proclaim that the items were indeed real.

"I just had to take one look at them to realize that all the items were real", said John Larry, an appraiser of gold and jewels on the Galapagos Islands. "I couldn't believe something like this was found on the beaches here."

Once the treasure was declared to be real it was up to the tour group to discover who the treasure might have belonged to. The group immediately went to the local historical society to start their research.

"We discovered that Blackbeard had a ship that was wrecked off the coast of the Galapagos Islands", said Kennedy. "That ship was believed to contain numerous chests filled with gold and gems, but when divers have looked for them they couldn't find them."

It is therefore assumed that the chest that was discovered on the shores of the Galapagos Islands belonged to Blackbeard. A local historian has been called in for a final appraisal of the treasure, but that will not be conducted until later next month.
