Teresa talks about a case with a mother. For obvious reason there will be no names. The woman was very scared for her three year old daughter and she would ask her child to not run so that she would not fall or would not let her touch wood so that she would not catch the splinters. It took her many sessions to learn to let go a little.
Teresa explains that this was a result of the mother's instincts kicking into overdrive. This is the case with every case of anxiety. Every time an instinct gets over worked over a cause that is imagined and non-existent. This is caused in response to deep-seated emotions that are never expressed. In the case explained this caused a fight response. But many people get the flight responses. This would explain incidents from forgetfulness in exams to blackouts during live performance in front of a large audience.
Teresa explains that sometimes the best option is to throw oneself into the motions and identify the cause. It is not always pretty but many times it gets the work done.
