(prHWY.com) November 28, 2012 - Decatur, IL -- If you are searching for a simplistic approach to repairing or cleaning cast iron, here is what you need to know. Repairing cast iron is a rather difficult process that usually requires hard work. You need to have the right tools, know how to use them appropriately and even consider some DIY training tutorials before you can say you have learned how to repair cast iron.

If you need to repair some cast iron plumbing, for instance, you can do the following. Start by attaching a metal cutting saw blade to the reciprocal saw. Carefully search for a pipe portion which is adjacent to the damaged area of the pipe. Using a saw, start cutting through the solid pipe portion and then look for a solid pipe portion on the opposite side of the respective damaged area. Then use the saw to make another cut through this pipe. Once you are done, attentively remove the cast iron pipe piece from the drain line. Then use empty clots to clean the open ends of the cast iron drain and remover all burrs. Wipe the ends using a rag and remove all traces of debris and shavings.

Once you are done with these steps of the repair cast iron process, it is time to insert a no hub coupling onto each of the open ends of your drain line. Then slide the couplings over the cast iron pipes and make sure they do not protrude into the void that the removed portion of the pipe has left behind. Using a chop saw cut pieces of ABS replacement pipe so that it can successfully fit into the respective void; insert and maintain the replacement pipe inside the void. Next, make sure you slide the couplings toward the replacement pipe, place them over the center of the joint and rotate the metal sleeve until its clamp screws face outward. Place a slotted screwdriver into the clamp slot, turn the clamp screws clockwise so that you can tighten the coupling sleeve's clamp against the rubber sleeve of the coupling.
