(prHWY.com) November 28, 2012 - Sanfrancisco, CA -- San Francisco, CA- Citizens of Alberta have spent over $2.1 billion on alcohol in the last twelve months. That number is more than $100 million over last year's sales in the province.
"As our population base grows, we have more Albertans, and more people 18-year-olds and over, consuming alcohol," AGLC spokeswoman Jody Korchinski said Wednesday. "A majority of our increase in consumption is related to population growth."
The information regarding Albertans' drinking and gambling was laid out by the legislature this week during the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission's 2011-'12 report. Activities by the commission's activities between the first of April, 2011 and March 31, 2012 broke down alcohol and gaming revenues in the area.
The $2.1 billion in sales for alcohol is the highest within the last five years. Sales dipped from 2009/10 to 2010/11. Sales sat at $2 billion mark in 2008-2009.
Albertans purchased 350,731,300 liters of all types of alcohol in the 2011-2012 period, with volume increasing in each category.
Beer was the most popular choice of alcohol, retaining its top position. It represented three-quarters of all alcohol sales.
Chief Executive of the AGLC, Gerry McLenna noted that more products were made available to the clientele. He stated in the AGLC's report that, "This past year, Albertans could choose from over 16,447 liquor products available compared to 15,929 the previous year."
Due to the purchasing power of the citizens, $687 million in liquor revenue was moved into the province's general revenue fund. That amounts to around $7 million more than the previous year, and alcohol is anticipated to add $718 million in to the total of the budget.
Gambling was found to be more prevalent than previously expected. There was $1.5 billion in provincial coffers in 2011-2012 Budget estimates, when the estimated was noted at $1.4 billion at the start of the year.
