Returns Should Be Filed Early to Avoid Year End Rush during Christmas-New Year, Says i3Group
i3Group says that tax payers should lodge their returns early to avoid the year end rush during the Christmas-New Year period. The tax office is going to remain closed for the duration of the holiday period.
(prHWY.com) December 20, 2012 - Victoria, Australia -- The Australian Taxation Office has stated earlier that it is going to remain closed during the Christmas-New Year holiday season. With this in mind, i3 Group advises tax payers to try and pay their taxes early so that they can avoid the year end rush.
The Australian Taxation Office will be suspending filing of returns and form processing from 3.00 PM December 21st until 9.00 AM January 2nd. The Commissioner of Taxation, Michael D'ascenzo, has warned that returns filed in the period between mid December and early January may be processed late.
The operator based service of the Taxation Office will also remain closed from 24th December to 1st January 2013. Self help services will be limited during the holiday period. However, tax payers can still access information online.
People who have filed their returns between 7th December and 21st December will start receiving their refunds from 2nd January. Returns filed after 22nd December will receive refunds only after 14th January.
Some types of returns, where more information may have to be solicited from tax payers, might also take greater time to process. This includes cases where information might have to be cross checked with the Child Support Program or Centerlink. Cases involving complex returns, where a tax officer may have to check data manually, will also take longer to process.
i3Group said the best way to be sure that the assessment will be cleared early by the taxation office is to make sure all details are right before returns are submitted. This includes adding a new address or a change in name done after the last return was filed, adding the date of birth, correct bank details, adding interest received from bank accounts or income from a previous job.
The group also noted that the fastest way to receive refunds was to sign up for an electronic funds transfer. The progress on the tax returns can be checked through the Tax Office's automated service. The service is available all seven days of the week, 24 hours a day. The only information required is the tax file number.
