Mobile Apps Choosing the right development approach

For software products and technology houses, it is just not enough to launch a mobile application catering to only a few platforms and expect to stay ahead of competition. At the same time, common sense dictates against betting heavily on an all out mobile strategy in a still emergent mobile technology space.

We at Changepond have tried to make sense out of the fragmented cross platform mobile application market. There are basically three ways to develop mobile applications

1) Native development: Apps written in the native language of the mobile platform allowing direct access to hardware features of the smartphone i.e. Objective C for iPhone/iOS; Java for Android,J2ME for Symbian etc.

2) Web App: Apps executed in a web browser that are developed using technologies such as Javascript,CSS and HTML5.

3) High level cross compilers: Sometimes referred to as 'frameworks' allow mobile apps to be written in high level languages that web developers are familiar with(e.g. HTML,CSS and Javascript) and then recompiled for different platforms
